How to Install & Configure Dialup
Networking for Win95 and Win98
This how-to gives step by step instructions on how to install and
configure dialup networking for Win95. Windows 98 users will find
these instructions almost the same as what you will see
under Windows 98. However, there are some minor differeces in wording
and dialog appearances. These are primarily cosmetic only.
This document assumes that you have the source media for Windows 95
as well as a modem to use for dialup purposes. The source media, or
"Install Disks" for Windows 95 will be on floppy disks, CD-Rom, or
on the hard drive of your computer, if it is a laptop that came with
Windows 95 preinstalled. Those with new machines may also have an
option to create source diskettes from their systems. This option
might also go by the name of ";Create Backup Diskettes", "Create
System Diskettes" or something similar. IMPORTANT: You must have
the source media in order to install dialup networking. If you've
been putting off making backup disks, now is the time to do it.
This document is divided into five sections:
- Checking to see if Dialup Networking needs to be installed

Depending on the type of modem you are planning to use for dialup

modems, as well as most popular brands, should install without any problems.
If you do run into difficulty, you can attempt to manually install your modem
by following the steps below:
- Make sure your modem is attached to your computer and that
the power is on. (Refer to your modem documentation for
instructions on how to attach the modem to the computer.)
- Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop

- Double-click the Modems icon

- You will now see the Install New Modem Screen. Check
the box that says Don't detect my modem, I will select it
from a list. Click Next.

- You will see a screen giving you various modem Manufacturers
and Models. Select the combination that matches your particular
brand. If there is no listing for your modem, click on the Have Disk
button and follow the instructions given.

Note: It is strongly recommended that you use a Tracent supported
modem for dialing into our network. We can only provide "Best Effort" for
non standard hardware. "Best Effort" is defined is what our technical
staff deem to be a reasonable amount of time. Any price advantages of
obscure equipment manufacturers can evaporate quickly if you encounter
problems.
